Budd Boetticher ist gestorben. In Berlin gibt’s ein paar seiner Filme auf Video, in der AGB und im Videodrome. Vor ein paar Jahren hat’s die auch zu sehen gegeben im Zeughauskino, in einer Westernreihe, auf Leinwand. Schön wäre es, würde man die jetzt wieder zeigen, weil die Filme wohl auch leihbar wären, wenn man Goettler glaubt, der im SZ-Nachruf von einer Retrospektive erzählt: 1995, in München. War da jemand?
Ich kenne nur eine Handvoll dieser Filme. Sie sind besonders dicht und konzentriert, was zu verbinden wäre mit den Bemerkungen hier über Zitieren und postklassisches Kino (von Jan Distelmeyer, Michael Girke, und jetzt auch Christian Petzold). Dazu, zum Zitieren und Wiederholen, folgt hier jetzt ein Zitat aus einem Interviewauszug mit Budd Boetticher, über die Arbeit mit seinem Kameramann an Ride Lonesome, USA 1959, 73 Minuten, das von einer amerikanischen Werkschauseite aus dem Internet stammt.
“I’ll tell you a wonderful thing about that, a great story. We were in Lone Pine and I wanted the opening of Ride Lonesome to show how infinitesimal the American cowboy was in those days, so Randolph Scott starts in this vast background before the titles about two inches high with his pack mule and his horse and you’d say „Wow, how did they even get across these mountains much less survive?“ So Lucien and I got up about 4:00 and we got in the van and we drove out to where the horses were and we rode up the mountain as far as we could and I wanted to get there by 5:30 when we could see where the sun was least lightening the sky and we got off the horses and the grooms took them and we walked and walked and walked and we got way up the top of this mountain and I said „Luce, right here, tomorrow morning, at 6:02, with a 35 lens.“ He said „Wait a minute“ and walked about ten feet and he dug his foot in the ground and there was a spike. He said „Come over here and look see which one you like best. Raoul Walsh and I made this shot about twelve years ago.“ I said „I like mine better.“ (laughter) So you see, there’s nothing new, but you have to have a great rapport with your cameraman.”
